I've been building and flying model balloons for over 25 years, and have never know such an exciting time to be involved in the hobby.

There are now more people, more events, bigger balloons, longer flights and better technologies, than at any other time in the sports history.

Welcome to my web site, have a good look around and I hope you will find valuable information, whether you are looking to build a balloon, fly at an event or just want to know more about model ballooning and the people who fly them.

Happy Landings

LATEST NEWS

AM7-40 (X-X) Blue Stock balloon goes out for testing.

It’s been a while, so I’m pleased to announce our newest stock balloon. Designed to stand out in the crowd, this envelope is idea for glowing while it also carries the unusual Double X pattern which spirals both left and right up the envelope and even creates a `frame’ which could see the balloon converted to carry advertising.

A popular size in the UK the 40m3 envelope has been the starting point for several model pilots and can be operated with a single burner either as a hopper or with a basket as a low cost entry level balloon. Want to know more, E-mail AMBalloons@hotmail.co.uk or find us at

Venturefest

Despite the best attempts of the mid November wind (25+ Mph winds) we successfully displayed the Venturefest balloon for the visitors and patrons of the prestigious event at York racecourse.

`The wind certainly made us work hard, till we found a nice sheltered spot close to the windows of the main display hall' much to the entertainment of the watching delegates.

RCM+E magazine features model balloons

A big thanks to the team at RCM+E magazine for running an article on model ballooning, This came about after a visit to the Wales international balloon Festival by Tim …… one of the magazines regular contributors.
The magazine is one of the mainstream radio control model press, and as a result can be picked up from the high street newsagents or by subscription, The content covers a wide variety of aircraft model activities but this is the first time they have ventured into the world of the model balloonist.
Thanks to everyone who helped out on the day and gave a demonstration of models flying in the Llangollen pavilion. Hopefully this will spread the interest to a whole new audience of R/C builders and enthusiasts.

WIBF flys by

Nice weather descended on the Llangollen valley on this early September weekend to allow the WIBF to take place. Model balloons flew over the 2 days inside the pavilion while 3 slots were flown by the big balloons from the grass arena outside. Saturday evening was blessed with calm conditions; a mass ascent from the arena was complemented with the red devils parachute team dropping in from 2 balloons who took off further up the valley and all followed up with a night glow and fireworks.
Sunday morning brought mist in the valley but balloons were able to fly over and clear away, while Sunday night’s balloon race had 6 balloons chasing the hare away to the east in the evening as the weather slot faded away.
Thanks to everyone who traveled far and wide to take part a great weekend of fun and all for a worthy cause.

VENTUREFEST - Reaching for new heights

There are a very limited number of AMBalloons produced with artwork, so it's nice to put together this project for an AM7-60 to be used by a commercial client.

Venturefest - Yorkshire encourages innovation, technology and entrepreneurial activities, and culminates in a grand final at York Racecourse in the Autumn.

AMBalloons are very pleased to support the MakeitYork team as they put together the event across the summer months visit Venturefestyorkshire.co.uk for details.

First basket from Howling Wolf arrives

As part of the venturefest project, Howling wolf model balloons provided the hardware to fly with the envelope, in the form of a `medium basket and frame' trimmed out in classic black leather and with added black cane weave.

WALES INTERNATIONAL BALLOON FESTIVAL

We are proud to announce that AMBalloons and the Llangollen model balloon meet team have been asked to help organize the return of Hot Air Ballooning at the Llangollen Pavilion, not as a private event but as a public balloon festival. The event will be similar to those which took place here during the late 90's and 00's and is set for the weekend of 16th to 18th September. I speak for all the committee when I say 'it's a very exciting opportunity for us as model balloonists and a unique feature of this festival'. STOCK KIT UP FOR GRABS

For the first time in some years I have build a stock AM7-40 envelope kit. The AM7-40 has proved to be one of the most successful sizes for introduction to the sport, not too small and not too big. The fabric is still in kit form allowing the owner to adapt the striking blue and white colour scheme before assembly, which can either be done as a home build project, or through our professional seamstress.

BUILD VIDEO

I've taken the opportunity to film a couple of balloons I've been building recently to create a time-lapse movie of the cutting process we employ at AMBalloons. thanks to Neil Ivison and Rose Harrison who's balloons acted as `guinea pigs' it was great to see the both in the air together at Llangollen, and it rounded off the video nicely.

LLANGOLLEN SPRING 2016

Once again Llangollen played host to an early season gathering of model balloons this year in February, where we were all greeted by unseasonably nice weather. 16 teams attended the day, with fun flying, an inflation and distance race and the usual mass inflation. Video of the races can be seen below.

THE HARRISON FAMILY NEW BALLOON

Welcome to Rose and Ian Harrison and their family (formally) to AMBalloons, and the AMBalloons pilots network. Their new Balloon a stunning pink and blue envelope was delivered to them at the recent Llangollen model balloon meet - Where Rose is well know for helping with the organization of the event

HOWLING WOLF

BRISTOL BALLOON FIESTA 2015

It's been quite a few years since I've taken the opportunity to visit Bristol fiesta and enjoy the spectacular launches, so 2015 felt like as good time as any to introduce my young family to the delights of 100 balloons lifting into the sky together

The last time I visited just 1 model balloon was present, this year I was delivering  of my own to eagerly awaiting owners.

STEAMPUNK Balloon comes to life

for some time I've been quietly working on a project to build a balloon that's a little bit different. A Steampunk balloon.

So what is STEAMPUNK all about, a theoretical world in which Victorian civilization and its steam power technology was not replaced by the internal combustion engine. Instead trains got faster, Airships and balloons became the common way to travel and inventors, adventurers, tinkers and pilots are held in high esteem. A world of cogs and pistons, brass and of course steam.

So to reflect these ideas, this standard AM7-60 in silver, gold, steel grey, golden yellow and black, is overlaid with a net, reflecting the gas balloon styles of early years ballooning, (this may be one of just 2 hot air balloons ever to fly with a net).

Below is a film of the testing and first flights and you can link to the special page dedicated to our Steampunk envelope from the menu on the left of this page.

Llangollen Hits New Heights

Model balloonists from across the UK found their way to Llangollen over the weekend of the 25th of April, to take part in the

`Llangollen model balloon meet 2015'

Its 6 years since the site hosted its last big gathering of model balloons, this year the even grew, from 12 teams to 19.

Pilots played a series of games, including a hopper launch, target practice and a mass inflation which saw 20 of the 55 attending envelopes inflated at the same time.

Several historical models attended as well as a couple of brand new envelopes, out the bag for the first time. AMBalloons was well represented with 12 Envelopes flown. A great day was had by all, Thanks to Llangollen Pavilion for the facility and to my co-organizers Rose, Neal and Steve.
